We live in a hectic world. Suddenly, being “busy” appears to have become the new norm. In the world we find ourselves in there is a constant struggle between the increased pace of the world and just being a human being. All of us feel like we are “juggling” our work and personal lives. This can have a negative effect on our wellbeing and mental health.
Mental illness is one of the leading causes of sickness absence and long-term work incapacity in Australia. Approximately 1 in
5 Australians will experience a mental illness every year. However, this number increases to 1 in 3 people in some especially “high-speed” professional industries such as information technology, media and telecommunication, finance and insurance.
There are a number of challenges that employees face today. For example, the environment we live and work in is always changing. It often feels like there are constantly new and complex economic and resource constraints on our organisations. Time is now measured in internet microseconds.
The vast majority of us are all continually connected to some internet connected device that regularly spits information at us that can overwhelm and isolate us.
So what can we do? Firstly, “multitasking” is a myth. It is not possible. Neuroscience tells us that the brain can’t do multiple tasks at once. Instead, it is simply switching tasks quickly as we switch between emailing, texting, working and choosing the new tune coming through our headphones. Rather than saving us time, multitasking actually costs time overall and it saps our energy. The healthiest workers have some method they use to manage the constant onslaught of inputs and stimuli to maintain their presence of mind and good health.
